Slow Down to Speed Up: Safety Protocols for Petrospec in Q1

January is about New Year’s resolutions. Sub-zero temperatures. And most importantly, safety measures.

With the ultimate goal of supporting crews and keeping everyone safe in the field and in the shop, Petrospec has renewed their safety goals for 2025 (and beyond).

Q1 is by far their busiest quarter. With a number of Green Hands on-staff (including new hires, Co-Op students, or engineers from the office who might be doing unfamiliar duties), safety protocols are of the utmost importance.

“When something bad happens (like a safety incident) it doesn’t contribute to speeding things up. We try to encourage field crews to ‘slow down to speed up.’ There’s no need to rush,” says Todd Oliver, safety/loss control manager at Petrospec.

Petrospec is running an updated and complete journey management program for 2025, which includes scheduled check-ins for departure and arrivals to site and base. As for their winter PPE protocols, keeping field operators warm and preventing injuries is an important part of their safety program (i.e., wearing thermal clothing, insulated gloves, and anti-slip footwear).

Q1 is also cold, dark, and road conditions can be an issue. Crews are focused on winter driving preparation and strategies, and are encouraging safe driving practices. Monitoring weather forecasts and planning crew travel accordingly in severe winter driving conditions is also part of their safety protocol.

Petrospec is also paying careful attention to these safety elements:

  • Training
  • Hazard control
  • Inspections and maintenance
  • Emergency response
  • Incident investigations
  • Program administration

“I’m spending more time in the field this year just to make sure competency checks are done, and to make sure that even our experienced guys are checking fatigue levels too,” Oliver adds. The Petrospec team looks forward to a busy 2025, and bringing their expertise to their customer base.
